A Very Special Bodhidharma Sesshin and Big Mind Retreat

This annual retreat is first and foremost a celebration of Bodhidharma, who brought the spirit and heart of Zen to China in the Sixth Century and was the First Patriarch of Chinese Ch’an (Zen). The founder of the famed Shaolin Temple, Bodhidharma is revered not only for bringing Zen to China, but for his depth of insight, remarkably clear teachings, and his lifelong and courageous effort to awaken human beings. Without him, we simply wouldn’t be here today.


This year the Bodhidharma retreat is especially significant because we will also be celebrating Genpo Roshi’s 35th anniversary of his Shukke Tokudo, the taking of his monk’s vows. This is a very important milestone in the long career of one of the world’s best-known and most influential Zen Masters.


Most all of Genpo Roshi’s successors, monks and top lay students will be here, and this week of meditation, teaching, discussions and Big Mind sessions may be the clearest, deepest, and most profound you will ever have a chance to experience.

Big Mind Four Week International Conference and Retreats

Date: October 25 – November 22, 2008

Location: Kanzeon Zen Center - Salt Lake City, Utah

We’re getting everything lined up for our biggest event of the year. This will be the Sixth Annual Big Mind Four-Week International Conference.

 

If you want to do some seriously intensive Big Mind work with the guy who invented it, have a great time with about 100 other people who are working the big questions, be served three monstrously good vegetarian meals a day, meditate in a beautiful zendo, and then maybe go for a hike up the mountain…well, you better sign up soon!  Our place is only so big and we’ll fill up fast for this one.

 

You can come to any individual weeks or for the whole month. Early Birds get a shot at actually staying here at Kanzeon Zen Center. Just call 801-328-8414 to make a reservation with Chet Cannon. Our housing is dormitory style where you share a room, but it’s a great place to stay and only $35 per night. Or, you can stay at one of the nearby B & B’s or a regular hotel downtown which is about a mile west of us.

 

These once a year events have been attended by hundreds from around the world and are not to be missed. If you can only do something like this once a year, do this one, seriously!

 

If that wasn’t enough, besides working closely with Genpo Roshi for up to four weeks, Diane Hamilton Sensei will also be leading the morning sessions every day. If you haven’t heard of Diane, look her up. One of the truly original and great women teachers in America, a professional mediator, a Zen Sensei, and our top Big Mind Facilitator. Oh, did I mention she also teaches for Ken Wilber’s Integral Institute? Diane rocks!

Rohatsu Sesshin and Big Mind Retreat

The Buddha was enlightened on the eighth of December around 2500 years as he looked up at the morning star, the planet we call Venus. The Buddha received that brightness with the same eyes of zazen [sitting meditation] that enable us to realize perfect enlightenment.


Join us for our final retreat of 2009. A very special time, every year, Rohatsu is the celebration of the Buddha’s day of enlightenment December 8.


We’ve planned a full schedule of sitting meditation, oryoki style meals and Big Mind sessions every afternoon with Genpo Roshi, plus special evening classes and ceremonies and a celebration of the Buddha way, your way.
